Your BESS earns money by participating in several revenue streams at once – known as “value stacking.” FLEXO continuously evaluates which combination of use cases is most profitable for your asset and switches between them automatically. These typically include:
Local self-consumption – storing surplus on-site or community PV and using it when grid prices are high.
Energy/ToU trading (day-ahead, intraday, imbalance) – charging when prices are low and discharging when they spike (“energy arbitrage”).
Grid ancillary services – providing fast, flexible capacity to support frequency regulation, balancing and reserve markets.
Capacity markets or long-term contracts where available, to secure more predictable income.
FLEXO’s algorithms decide in real time how much of your battery to allocate to each of these, so your BESS is always “parked” in the most attractive opportunity while respecting technical limits and your business constraints.
Returns depend heavily on market, volatility, asset size, degradation strategy, regulation and your commercial setup, so there is no single number that fits every project. On this page, we illustrate up to ~€163,000/MW per year for a 1 MW / 2 MWh BESS with 80% DoD in a medium-performance year – to show what is achievable in average conditions. In practice, your business case will be shaped by:
- Where your asset is located market design, ancillary products, capacity markets, grid charges.
- Price volatility and liquidity in day-ahead, intraday and balancing markets.
- How smartly the BESS is optimised across stacked revenues rather than a single use case.
- Battery lifetime strategy (cycle limits, depth of discharge) and your financing structure.
As a rule of thumb, professional optimisation can often shorten payback by even more than half when fully monetised, in markets with healthy volatility and ancillary opportunities – which is the kind of improvement FLEXO is designed to unlock.
At a high level, you’ll need:
- Grid-connected BESS assets – typically totalling 0.5–1 MW+ for direct market participation, but smaller systems can often be monetised when aggregated.
- Energy Management System (EMS/HEMS) or similar controller that FLEXO can connect to. FLEXO already supports a range of EMS providers and manufacturer APIs listed on the page.
- Reliable metering and communications so dispatch signals and measurements flow securely between site, FLEXO and market partners.
- A route to market – either via our integrated BSP partners or your own BSP / market access contracts, which FLEXO can work with.
From there, onboarding typically involves connecting your assets and integrations, configuring constraints (SoC limits, reserved capacity, cycling caps) and validating a test period before going fully live on markets.
